Dual Investments

Last updated: August 19, 2026

Dual Investments are a short-term yield instrument that allow you to earn a fixed yield over a set period of time. The yield rate is known in advance, but the currency used for your final payout depends on market conditions at settlement.

In every scenario, you earn yield. What changes is whether the final payout is delivered in cryptocurrency or in fiat currency, based on whether the market price is above or below a predefined target price at expiration.

This article explains what Dual Investments are, how settlement works, and exactly how to place, track, and automate them on Kraken Pro and the Kraken Pro App.

What are Dual Investments?

A Dual Investment is a structured instrument where:

  • The yield rate is set when you place the investment.

  • The payout currency at settlement depends on market movement relative to your trigger price.

  • APR is determined by current market conditions. Once you confirm, your APR is set for the duration of the investment.

You’ll always see both potential payout outcomes on the order form before you confirm.

  • Investment asset: The asset you commit when placing the Dual Investment. Choose an asset tile (BTC, ETH, ADA, DOGE, HYPE, SOL, XRP, and more), then a direction. Sell high commits the crypto asset itself. Buy low commits USD against that asset.

  • Secondary asset: The alternate asset you may receive at settlement. This is USD if you chose Sell high, or the crypto asset if you chose Buy low.

  • Trigger price: The price level that determines which currency you receive at settlement.

  • APR (annual percentage rate): An annualized rate. Dual investments are often short-duration, so your actual yield reflects the period shown on the order screen.

  • Period/duration: How long funds are locked for the investment.

  • Settlement: The date/time used to determine the outcome and begin payout.

  • Reference rate (Ref Rate): A reference price used for settlement-related calculations and display.

At settlement, Kraken compares the relevant market’s settlement price to your trigger price. Then your principal and yield are paid out in either the investment asset or the secondary asset.

What happens at settlementResult
Trigger price not metYou receive your investment back plus yield in the investment asset.
Trigger price is metYou receive the proceeds plus yield in the secondary asset.

Dual investments can be set up in two directions, chosen when you pick your asset. Sell high invests the crypto asset for a potential USD payout. Buy low invests USD for a potential crypto payout. The settlement price compared to your trigger price determines which asset you receive.

  • Make sure you have enough available balance in the asset you want to invest. Dual investments use funds from your Spot balance and lock them for the duration.

  • Once placed, you can’t unsubscribe or exit early before expiry/settlement.

  • The APR quote can be time-limited and may change with market movement. If your quote expires, you’ll need to refresh it before confirming. The APR rate does not change after confirmation.

  • Based on your jurisdiction, the first time you use Dual Investments, you may need to accept additional terms and complete any required eligibility steps.

Setting up Recurring Investments

How recurring investments work

A recurring investment is a rule that runs once a week, or every two weeks, after your funds settle.

At each execution, Kraken takes a snapshot of the available Dual Investments and places one that matches the settings in your rule.

The asset, amount, and duration stay the same. What else stays fixed depends on the type you choose when you set up the rule:

  • APR: you fix your APR preference, and the trigger price can vary from week to week.

  • Price: you fix the trigger price, and the APR you receive can vary from week to week.

You choose APR or Price in the order form when you set up the rule.

Reading the chart

For an APR-based rule, the order form shows a Historical APR chart: the highest, median, and lowest APR offered each week. Use it to gauge the trend. For example, if APRs have been falling week over week, you may want to lower your APR range so your rule can still be filled. If they have been climbing, you have more room to target a higher APR.

For a price-based rule, the order form shows the historical index price, so you can set a realistic trigger price relative to where the market has been.

A new data point is captured every Friday, just before execution, so the chart reflects the same conditions used when your rule runs.

What you set when creating a rule

  • Investment asset: the asset you want to invest each week (for example, BTC, ETH, or USD), using the same options available for a one-time Dual Investment.

  • Duration: how long each investment is active, either 1 week or 2 weeks.

  • Quantity: the amount of the investment asset to commit each week.

  • Type: APR or Price.

    • For APR, set your APR preference (Highest, Median, or Lowest) and, optionally, an APR range (a minimum, a maximum, or both) to limit which options are considered.

    • For Price, set the trigger price you want to invest at each week.

  • Time in force: how the rule behaves over time (see below).

Time in force: Good till Cancel vs Good till Fail

  • Good Till Cancel (GTC): the rule keeps running every week until you cancel it.

  • Good Till Fail (GTF): the rule cancels itself automatically the first week it cannot be filled.

Rule statuses

  • Scheduled: the rule is queued for an upcoming weekly execution and has not run yet.

  • Successful: the weekly execution ran and the investment was placed.

  • Skipped: the execution was attempted but no investment was placed, for example because no option matched your settings, or you did not have enough funds.

  • Cancelled: the rule was cancelled, either by you or automatically under Good Till Fail.

Funding your rule

  • You can create a rule even if you do not currently hold the full quantity. You will see a reminder to deposit funds before the next execution.

  • If you do not have enough available balance when the rule runs, that week is skipped. Under Good Till Cancel the rule tries again the following week. Under Good Till Fail the rule is cancelled.

Limits and managing rules

  • You can have up to 10 active rules at a time. To create another once you reach the limit, cancel an existing rule first.

  • You can edit or cancel a rule at any time.

  • Cancelling a rule stops future weekly investments. It does not exit a Dual Investment the rule has already placed. Like any Dual Investment, those run until their own settlement and cannot be unlocked early.

Execution is not guaranteed

Setting up a rule is a standing instruction for automatic weekly Dual Investments. Yield and trigger price are determined at each execution based on market conditions at that time. For a Price rule your trigger price is fixed, but the APR still depends on market conditions, so any week where your settings cannot be met is skipped.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

No. Dual Investments, once they are confirmed, cannot be cancelled or unlocked early. You must wait until the payout is processed after the settlement date/time to receive your funds. To view the settlement date/time of an active investment, follow the steps above.

If the trigger price is met at settlement, your invested amount is converted into the secondary asset and paid out alongside any yield generated for the term. For a Sell high investment, this means your crypto converts to USD. For a Buy low investment, this means your USD converts to the crypto asset.

Kraken uses the reference rate shown in the order form to determine the settlement conversion used for the payout calculation. The order form and the investment details at the time of confirmation show the key numbers, including the trigger price and reference rate used at settlement.

Both place a new Dual Investment for you each week using the same asset, amount, and duration. With APR, you fix your APR preference and the trigger price can change each week. With Price, you fix the trigger price and the APR you receive can change each week.

The payout asset depends on the settlement price relative to your trigger price. The order form shows both outcomes so you can confirm what you’ll receive in either case.

It usually means the investment has reached settlement, and the payout is in progress. The app/website often shows an estimated window such as “< Xh from settlement.”

Dual investment pricing can be time-sensitive. “Valid for” indicates how long you have to confirm the investment details before it needs to refresh.

For some regions or account types, Dual Investments may require additional verification for eligibility. Follow the on-screen steps and return to Dual investments afterwards.

Your funds are automatically paid into your Spot balance.

See our Risk Disclosures page for more information about the risks of Dual Investments.

Yes. You can cancel a recurring investment rule at any time to stop future weekly investments. Cancelling a rule does not affect any Dual Investment it has already placed. Those continue until their own settlement and cannot be unlocked early. You can also choose Good Till Fail when you set up a rule, which cancels the rule automatically the first week it cannot be filled.

Up to 10 active rules at a time. Cancel an existing rule to create another once you reach the limit.

That week is skipped. Under Good Till Cancel the rule tries again the following week. Under Good Till Fail the rule is cancelled.
