Why is there a withdrawal hold on my account?

Last updated: Mar 27, 2026

For security reasons, Kraken may place a withdrawal hold on deposited funds or following certain account actions. These holds help protect your assets and prevent fraudulent activity. Below are the most common scenarios where a withdrawal hold may apply:

Certain instant purchases, such as first time debit or credit card or digital wallet purchases (Apple pay or Google pay), will trigger a withdrawal hold for 72 hours. The amount of the withdrawal hold is equivalent to the amount of the purchase, not your total account balance. Withdrawal holds may also be triggered by deposits from certain banks as well for security reasons. Additional cash purchases made during this 72-hour hold will also be locked for the remainder of the 72 hours.

Purchases via ACH Plaid will have a seven day hold on withdrawals. This hold will apply to any assets in cash or cryptocurrency, equal to the purchased amount.

Trading is unaffected, you will still be able to trade throughout the period of the withdrawal hold.

For enhanced security, debit/credit card purchases using Apple Pay, and Google Pay will trigger a 72-hour withdrawal hold on the first purchase only.

Paypal deposits, will trigger a 72 hour withdrawal hold on every purchase, not just your first purchase.

Purchases via ACH Plaid will have a seven day hold on withdrawals. This hold will apply to any assets in cash or cryptocurrency, equal to the purchased amount. The withdrawal hold does not apply to trading.

When an ACH deposit or purchase is made, a withdrawal hold is applied to the funds used in that transaction. During this hold period, the available withdrawal amount will reflect your total spot balance minus the portion of funds currently subject to the withdrawal hold. This means that while your full balance remains visible in your account, only the portion not associated with the ACH withdrawal hold will be available for withdrawal until the hold period expires.

If you make any changes to your password, withdrawals to new withdrawal addresses will be held for 24 hours, for security purposes. Any withdrawals to updated withdrawal addresses, within 24 hours of a password reset, will also be held. Addresses that you already added to your account won’t be affected.
