Creating an iCloud backup

Kraken Wallet now offers encrypted iCloud backups for your Secret Recovery Phrase. To learn more about this feature, please visit our iCloud Backup blog post.

This guide covers how new or existing Kraken Wallet users can create an encrypted iCloud backup.

Important

Please be aware that iOS supports the sharing of passkeys between users, such as for family accounts. When you create an iCloud backup for your Kraken Wallet, this backup is stored in a passkey. If you share your passkeys with others, then you are sharing access to your Kraken Wallet.

Before creating an iCloud backup, consider whether you share your device or iCloud account with others. Anyone who has access to both could potentially access your Kraken Wallet, even if you've set a password for the app.

If you are creating a wallet for the first time with Kraken Wallet, or creating a fresh wallet with a new Secret Recovery Phrase, then follow these steps:

    Download and open the Kraken Wallet app.

    Tap the Create wallet button.

    On the ‘Back up your wallet’ screen, tap Back up with iCloud.

    Then, tap Create a passkey.

    Complete the two authorization steps using FaceID. Please note that if you fail to complete both steps, your iCloud backup will fail.

    Optional (recommended): Create a secondary backup by tapping Back up manually and completing the manual backup steps.

If you already have created or imported a Secret Recovery Phrase with Kraken Wallet, follow these steps:

    Open the app and tap the Settings icon in the top right corner.

  2. 2

    Look for the prominent "Cloud backup recommended" message. Then, tap Back up with iCloud.

    Follow the guided backup process.

Note: if you're an existing Kraken Wallet user and don't see the "iCloud backup recommended" prompt in Settings, you can try the following:

    Update your Kraken Wallet app to the latest version.

    Update your mobile device to iOS 17 or later.
