A recent iOS update has caused an issue where some Kraken Wallet users may be unable to restore their wallet from an iCloud backup on a new or freshly-installed device. We're actively working on a fix.
This guide covers the temporary workaround and what to do if you're affected.
Your funds are safe. This issue affects the iCloud backup recovery flow, not the wallet itself or your assets on-chain. As long as you have access to your Secret Recovery Phrase, either through an existing device or a manual backup, you can restore your wallet.
You may be affected if all of the following apply:
If you still have access to an older Apple device, you can recover your wallet from iCloud backup there, then secure your Secret Recovery Phrase manually.
On an older iPhone or iPad running a compatible iOS version (typically a device that was not updated to the most recent iOS release), install the Kraken Wallet app.
Follow the standard iCloud recovery steps: Recovering your wallet with iCloud backup.
Once your wallet is restored, immediately create a manual backup of your Secret Recovery Phrase. See: Backing up your Secret Recovery Phrase.
Store your manual backup somewhere safe and offline (paper, metal seed plate, secure password manager).
Once you have your Secret Recovery Phrase backed up manually, you can restore your wallet on any device, including a new one, by selecting Enter seed phrase instead of Import from iCloud. This bypasses the affected flow entirely.
If you no longer have an older Apple device, contact Kraken Support so we can help you explore options. Have the following ready:
Even after this issue is resolved, we strongly recommend keeping a manual backup of your Secret Recovery Phrase as a secondary safeguard. iCloud backup is convenient, but a manual backup gives you full control and works regardless of device, OS, or iCloud account status.
