My device was lost or stolen

When the device that your Kraken Wallet is hosted on is lost or stolen, the level of exposure to your assets depends on the security features enabled prior.

Here are some recommendations to ensure the security of your wallet after your device was lost or stolen.

For iOS devices:

  1. 1

Report the loss or theft of your iPhone to local law enforcement.

  2. 2

Mark the device as lost in Find Devices on icloud.com/find. (In order to mark a device as lost, the device must have been turned on in Find Devices before it’s lost.)

  3. 3

Sign in your account with your Apple ID.

  4. 4

If your device was stolen, we recommend to erase your lost or stolen device in Find Devices.

When you erase a device in Find Devices, an Activation Lock remains on to protect the device. Your Apple ID & password are required to reactivate the device.

For android devices:

  1. 1

Report the loss or theft of your phone to local law enforcement.

  2. 2

Go to android.com/find. (For the Android device to be found the device will need to be signed in to Google Account, Location turned on, Find My Device turned on before it’s lost)

  3. 3

Sign in to your Google Account.

  4. 4

At the top of the sidebar, select the lost device.

  5. 5

The lost device gets a notification.

  6. 6

On the map, you'll get info about where the device is.

Note: The location is approximate and may not be accurate. If your device can't be found, you may find its last known location, if available.

  7. 7

If you get a prompt, tap Enable lock & erase.

  8. 8

Secure device: Locks your device with your PIN or password. If you don't have a lock, you can set one. To help someone return your device to you, you can add a message or device number to the lock screen.

  9. 9

Erase device: Permanently deletes all data on your device, but may not delete SD cards. After you erase, Find My Device won't work on the device.

Other actions you can take

If your device is lost or stolen, and you wish to take proactive steps to safeguard your assets, you can access your funds from another device so long as you have your Secret Recovery Phrase (SRP).

  1. 1

Download the Kraken Wallet app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android)

  2. 2

Import your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase. For a step-by-step guide visit: Import a wallet to Kraken Wallet

  3. 3

Once you have imported your wallet, you have two options:

    a) Transfer funds to another wallet with a different Secret Recovery Phrase. This is to mitigate the risk of someone gaining unauthorized access to your Kraken Wallet on your lost/stolen device.

    b) Transfer funds to a trading platform, such as Kraken, that you have an account with.

Important
  1. 1

Download a self-custody wallet that supports the asset(s) you wish to transfer out of your Kraken Wallet. For example, there are multiple browser extension wallets that you can consider choosing.

  2. 2

Import your wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase. For instructions, visit Import a wallet to Kraken Wallet.

  3. 3

Once you have imported your wallet, you have two options:

    1. Transfer funds to another wallet with a different Secret Recovery Phrase. This is to mitigate the risk of someone gaining unauthorized access to your Kraken Wallet on your lost/stolen device.

    2. Transfer funds to a crypto trading platform, such as Kraken, that you have an account with.

    Important

It is important to remember that Kraken Wallet is a self-custody wallet and the the responsibility for keeping your assets stored safe is solely with the wallet owner.

Even with all the steps provided, there's still a possibility that your Kraken Wallet is compromised unless the device is recovered before anyone accesses it.
