How to find the setup key or backup code for authenticator app 2FA

Two-factor authentication (2FA) that uses the authenticator app method can be backed up by storing the setup key. However, the best way to protect against a lost sign-in 2FA is to set up a Master Key and store it in a separate location and device, or by using a Hardware Security Key instead.

Funding 2FA and Trading 2FA do not need to be backed up because they can be changed by using sign-in 2FA.

While setting up an authenticator app for 2FA you can view the setup key which we automatically generate as a QR code, but which can also be read in plain text by clicking on View setup key. It is sometimes also referred to as a "backup code" or "secret seed code".

The setup key can be manually entered into most authenticator apps to restore your 2FA. Please contact the developer of your app (e.g. Google, Microsoft, etc.) to find out how to do this.

Store your authenticator setup key like you would a password

If not securely stored, the setup key can be compromised and used to gain access to your account. Furthermore please do not share your setup key with anyone, including our Support team.A more secure alternative to writing down your setup key would be to set up a Master Key in a separate location and device, or by using a Hardware Security Key instead.
