Trading futures on Kraken Derivatives US involves several types of fees. These fees are either percentage-based or flat per-contract charges, and are assessed at entry and exit for each trade.
Each trade will include the following fees:
Fee | Description |
|---|---|
Commission | Commissions are the fees charged by the brokerage firm for executing the trade. This cost can be any amount chosen by each brokerage firm. |
Exchange & NFA Fee | These fees are charged by the exchange and the National Futures Association (NFA). This fee does not vary between brokerage firms, but does vary between different futures contracts. |
Clearing Fee | This fee is charged by the clearing firm, also known as the Futures Commission Merchant (FCM), and can vary between brokerage firms, but does not vary between futures contracts. |
These fees apply on each side of the trade—both when a position is opened and when it is closed.
Kraken Derivatives US charges a commission of 0.5 basis points (0.00005) per side. This is calculated based on the notional value of the trade.
Formula: Commission Fee = Notional Value x 0.00005
Example:
Trade 1 contract of MBT at $60,000 (0.1 BTC)
Notional Value = $60,000 x 0.1 = $6,000
Commission Fee = $6,000 x 0.00005 = $0.30
Because this applies to both entry and exit, the round-trip total would be $0.60 in this case. Commission fee will be rounded up to the nearest cent if under $0.01.
This fee is deducted immediately from your account balance when your order is filled and included in your realized PnL when the position is closed.
All rates quoted on Kraken’s website are per contract and per side. To calculate a round-turn rate (buy and sell), you will need to double the per-contract rate. To calculate a rate for trades involving multiple positions, multiply the all-in, round-trip rate by the number of contracts you are trading.
Yes. Exchange, NFA, and clearing fees are subject to change by the respective parties. Traders should regularly review their contract’s fee schedule and the contract specifications page for the latest details.
Fee changes can occur due to:
CME fee schedule updates
NFA regulatory adjustments
FCM clearing cost revisions
All fees are clearly broken out:
In the order preview window before confirming your trade
On the contract specification page for each instrument
