Maintenance windows for US Perpetual Futures

This article covers the scheduled maintenance windows that apply to US Perpetual Futures on Kraken Pro, what to expect during each window, and how to stay informed.

Every Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm CT, Kraken Derivatives US performs scheduled maintenance covering both Bitnomial Exchange and NinjaTrader systems. This window has two phases:

5:00 to 6:00 pm CT, trading suspended

Bitnomial Exchange is offline during this period. The order form will be disabled and you will not be able to open, close, or modify positions.

6:00 to 7:00 pm CT, rolling restart

Trading resumes and the order form will be re-enabled. Some orders may be rejected during this period, so retry if needed.

Note: orders are not queued during maintenance. Any orders you want to place must be submitted after the relevant system is back online.

Approximately once per quarter, CQG, the market data and order routing infrastructure that connects Kraken Pro to Bitnomial Exchange, undergoes extended maintenance. This window typically lasts around four hours but may run longer.

During quarterly CQG maintenance:

  • The order form will be disabled for the full duration
  • You will not be able to open, close, or modify positions
  • Orders are not queued during this window
  • Live status updates will be posted at status.kraken.com
  • Market data will also be unavailable for the duration of this window

You will receive advance notice by email before any quarterly CQG maintenance window. A banner will also appear on Kraken Pro when maintenance is active.

Your open positions remain active during any maintenance window. They are not closed or modified. However, because the order form is disabled during the Bitnomial Exchange and CQG maintenance periods, you will not be able to act on those positions until trading resumes.

If you have open positions and want to avoid exposure during a maintenance window, close or reduce those positions ahead of the maintenance window:

  • Weekly maintenance: occurs every Friday 5:00 to 7:00 pm CT. Close or reduce positions before 5:00 pm CT. No additional notice is sent for the weekly window.
  • Quarterly CQG maintenance: advance notice sent by email. Updates posted at status.kraken.com throughout.
  • Unplanned outages: if an unplanned outage affects perpetual futures trading, status updates will be posted at status.kraken.com. Monitor your open positions and available margin if trading is suspended for an extended period.

Funding payments and liquidation thresholds remain active during maintenance.

Note: funding payment details may not be visible during the maintenance window, but they will be reflected in your account once trading resumes.

Futures and spot margin trading involves substantial risk and is not suitable for everyone. You may lose all or more than the initial investment, exceeding the value of collateral deposited with the firm to open and maintain the position. You may be required to provide additional collateral on short notice or no notice, and you may remain responsible for any deficiency after liquidation and collateral application. Trading should be undertaken only with risk capital, funds that can be lost without jeopardizing one's financial security or lifestyle, and only by those who can afford such losses. While leverage can increase potential returns, it also significantly increases risk. Leverage available may vary by asset. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results. Availability of spot margin trading through Kraken Derivatives US is subject to certain limitations and eligibility criteria. View Risk Disclosure Statement.
