Updates to Crypto Transfer Procedures for AU Clients

Last updated: 17.3.2026

Kraken has implemented adjustments to how we handle crypto transfers in and out of the platform, for Australian clients. These changes are designed to align crypto with the security standards already in place for traditional financial systems, and to meet our regulatory obligations under AUSTRAC's Travel Rule requirements.

The Travel Rule sets standards requiring financial institutions and Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) to exchange details about the parties involved in virtual asset transactions. Its goal is to curb the use of cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets for illicit purposes by making it harder for criminals to remain anonymous. As a result, in some circumstances you will now be required to provide additional information during your crypto deposits and withdrawals.

Beginning March 31st 2026, deposits and withdrawals involving private wallets will require additional verification steps. These updates are part of Australia's broader regulatory framework for digital assets.

You can choose from two methods:

  • Self-Certification: one-click confirmation using your existing Funding 2FA. Quick and straightforward. If you do not have Funding 2FA enabled, you will be prompted to set it up before you can proceed with the verification. Learn more about 2FA here.
  • Digital Signature: connect your wallet and sign a unique message generated by Kraken. The message is non-transactional and does not move any funds. It simply confirms you control the wallet's private key. Learn more about Digital Signature here.

At Kraken, we prioritise security in everything we do and we are fully committed to protecting your data. You may read our Privacy Notice for a detailed overview on how we manage personal data.

Verification is required when:

  • You deposit crypto from a private (self-custodied) wallet to your Kraken account
  • You withdraw crypto from your Kraken account to a private wallet
  • You use a new wallet address that has not previously been verified

No. Verification is one-time per wallet address. Once a wallet is verified, it is whitelisted and future deposits/withdrawals using that same address will not require re-verification.
