Overview of Opt-In Rewards on Kraken

No. While similar in design on our client interface, Staking and Opt-In Rewards are separate products. Staking utilizes assets “onchain” in Proof-of-Stake protocol such as Tezos. Opt-In Rewards utilizes assets as further described in our Terms of Service.

Fixed Rate Opt-In Rewards lets you lock in a reward rate for a set term. When you allocate, you choose how long you want to commit, and your rate is fixed for that entire term.

Your assets stay allocated/locked until the term reaches its maturity date, at which point they become available again. Your rewards compound weekly into the same allocation. If rates change after you've allocated, your locked rate stays the same. Any new rate only applies to new allocations made after the change. Kraken is not able to unlock assets for you.

Auto-renew: When you allocate, you can choose to auto-renew. If enabled, your allocation will automatically roll into a new term of the same length when the current one matures, so you keep earning without any action needed. The rate for the new term will be the prevailing rate at the time it renews. You can turn auto-renew on or off at any time during the term.

If you allocate your assets to a bonded term Opt-In Rewards product, your assets will be subject to a wait time after you deallocate them before you can use them for other purposes.

Additionally, rewards will continue to accrue during the unbonding period following deallocation, after which the full balance will be accessible in your wallet.

Note: Bonded products are available in both Kraken Pro and Kraken.

In contrast to Bonded Opt-In Rewards, Flexible Opt-In Rewards products permit the user to have almost immediate access to their tokens when they decide to deallocate.

Opt-In Rewards is not showing as an option for your Kraken account, you may not be eligible. Note that Flexible Opt-In Rewards is only available in Kraken Pro. Bonded, Fixed Rate, and Opt-in Rewards and Auto Earn Opt-in Rewards are available in both Kraken Pro and Kraken.

Opt-In rewards are paid out once per week. There may be variance in payout timing due to platform upgrades, but reward amounts will be accurate to the period accrued.

Each asset will earn rewards at its own Annual Percentage Rate (APR). The reward rate is different per asset, and rewards will be paid out in kind. For example, your rewards for BTC will be in BTC. Rewards will only be added if the reward is greater than the smallest decimal precision.

All rewards that have been earned via Opt-In Rewards are counted and will appear in the total rewards column on the Earn page.

Note: Non-BTC 30-day Bonded Opt-in Rewards products are now deallocate only. This means you cannot make any new allocations to these products but will continue to earn rewards on any existing balances, and can only deallocate/withdraw. If you choose to fully deallocate/withdraw from these 30-Day Bonded products, you will not be able to reallocate back to them. For geographies where Fixed Rate is available, Non-BTC 60-day Bonded products are also on deallocate only.

If you participated in a bonded Opt-In Rewards program, your funds are not locked for a mandatory period prior to unbonding. You can initiate a request to exit the program and start the unbonding period for your funds at any time.

The unbonding period only begins when you choose to exit the rewards program (i.e., when you request to unbond). For example, if you are allocated to a 60-day bonded product, once you make a request to unbond, your funds are not available for use until the 60-day unbonding period ends.

Opt-In Rewards assets will continue to earn rewards during the unbonding period.

There is no minimum allocation time required to earn rewards for Opt-In Rewards .

You start earning prorated rewards for Opt-In Rewards as soon as it is processed by Kraken (which may be within minutes of you Opting-in your funds). Any rewards earned will be credited to your Opt-In Rewards balance on the following payout day.

There are currently no fees for Opt-In Rewards (whether in Bonded, Fixed Rate, or Flexible).

The Kraken website and mobile app may truncate decimal places of small rewards. Rewards below five decimal places will only display on exported ledger history.

While your assets are held in our Opt-In Rewards program, they are not available for trading and cannot be withdrawn to an external (non-Kraken) account or wallet. 

Upon receipt of your request, we’ll initiate the Opt-Out process. The assets returned to you, and the timeframe within which they will be returned to you, will depend upon whether the crypto assets contributed to the Opt-In Rewards program are unutilized or utilized at the time you submit your request, and on where you are located. Please see our Terms of Service for more detail on the terms that apply to you.

Opt-In Rewards of BTC, USDG, USDC and USDT can also impact your equity for margin trading, because these assets are collateral currencies and while opted In, will be removed from your trading and equity balances. Your equity balances affect your free margin and margin level for margin trading.

Yes, Opt-In Rewards is available in both mobile and web, with the Flexible products only available in Kraken Pro.
