How options profit and loss works

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Options P&L isn’t linear. It’s shaped by your strike price, premium and breakeven. The examples below are three quick scenarios showing how strategy choice shapes outcomes.

Max loss

The most you can lose on the trade.

  • Buyers: premium paid

  • Sellers: significant or unlimited, depending on the strategy

Max profit

The most you can gain on the trade.

  • Some strategies are capped

  • Others are open-ended

Breakeven

The price where profit equals zero at expiration. Your trade must move beyond this level to make money.

  • At expiration: the outcome is fixed. The option either has value or expires worthless.

  • Before expiration: price moves continuously with the market, and profit and loss fluctuates with it. An option can still hold value even when it’s below breakeven, thanks to remaining time value.

Why this matters

You don’t need to hold an option until expiration. You can close the position at any point before expiration, locking in profits or cutting losses.
