Changes that affected our Maine clients

Last updated: 16 October 2026

Kraken stopped serving clients who resided in Maine. In 2024, we notified Maine clients that Kraken would halt services for clients residing in Maine from June 1, 2024. Unfortunately, this change was final for the time being, and we asked clients residing in Maine to withdraw their funds from Kraken within 90 days.

What this meant for Maine residents

Clients in Maine were asked to withdraw their funds by April 12, 2025.

Assets remaining on Kraken after this date were classified as abandoned and escheated to the state of Maine in accordance with state law. This meant funds were transferred to the state and were no longer accessible through Kraken.

While we always strove to provide access to as many clients as possible, at times, there were specific state-level considerations that impeded our ability to do so.

Although we expected to restart services to Maine clients in the future, we didn’t have a firm timeline at the time.

We directed clients to our guide on how to sign in to your account, which walked them through troubleshooting steps so they could access their accounts as quickly as possible.

We asked clients to withdraw their funds as soon as possible, and prior to April 12, 2025.

We cared deeply about our mission of accelerating the adoption of cryptocurrency globally, and Kraken remained committed to growing in the U.S. market. We continuously evaluated our presence across all geographies and regions we operated in and always strove to provide access to as many clients as possible.

We didn’t have any other changes to share.

The SEC lawsuit against Kraken was unrelated and was not a factor in deciding to stop serving Maine clients.

Kraken couldn’t comment on its discussions with specific regulators. We continued to strive towards our mission of accelerating the adoption of cryptocurrency. This goal was our first priority as we engaged with clients, the general public and regulators.
